On May 25 the African continent celebrates the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) now the African Union back in 1963 and for the first time the spirit of Ubuntu is being celebrated differently in Gweru.
This year’s Africa Day celebrations in the Midlands will be celebrated through a festival of African music, dance, food and culture to be hosted at Kanuka Venue and Events Centre, dubbed The Afro May Fill up.
One of the organisers Wayne Mubata said the festival is built upon the principles of Ubuntu.
“Patrons will get an opportunity to get in touch with their roots as the event is aimed at promoting the diversity in our African culture at the same time promoting peace, love and unity within the population.
“Kanuka Venue and Events Centre is located along Mvuma road just before the Whawha Prison turn off,” she said.
Her partner Jeremiah Jongwe said the event is going to be set up to cater for all ages with the family day running from 10am up to 6pm.
“The event features a diverse line up of acts from the local scene. Acts include the Footprints band, VodooZW, traditional dancers, poets, mbira band, marimba as well as deejays including Mupsy, Oxygen, Crox, Nelz, Brian (Kwekwe) and many more.”
