AFRO-FUSION trio Gwevedzi Redefined has continued to win the hearts of millions with its unique sound, which is deeply rooted in Shona tradition.
The group is made up of Tinashe Masangudza (lead guitar), Wilfred Nikisi (bass), and Abel Mafuleni (mbira/marimba).
The trio has vowed to keep promoting African music.
Group spokesperson Masangudza firmly believes that creativity is what makes them unique.
“We are always determined to make sure that our act is different. That is why we sometimes work as a trio or a quartet, depending on the set,” Masangudza told Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub.
“We have roped in mbira player Abel Mafuleni to ensure that our act remains deeply connected to our African culture.”
“We are going to do everything in our powers to ensure that we come up with something unique.”
“As a trio, we have different styles, and it is always a marvel to see us working as a team again.”
Masangudza also spoke about the power of collaborations, which have boosted their fan base.
“To be honest with you, we believe in the spirit of collaborations, both locally and internationally. On the 28th of May, we are dating Asante Mo from Bulawayo at Theatre in the Park, where we have made a huge fan base.”
Masangudza, who has collaborated with several artistes from Uganda, South Sudan, Kenya, and the Democratic Republic of Congo under the “East Meets South” project, added:
“Like I indicated earlier on, we have always enjoyed working with other artistes across the continent as a way of enhancing our fan bases. The move has worked in our favour, and we will continue doing that job.”
Masangudza said they will continue looking for more opportunities.
He said Gwevedzi hopes this will be an annual event, with each album bringing together artistes from across the continent in a fusion of styles, voices, and cultural influences.
Gwevedzi Redefined’s musical appeal has been boosted by its unique compositions. Their refreshing single, “Rise,” is a testament to this journey, embodying their courage and determination.
Formed in Harare in 2016, Gwevedzi is known for its ability to blend genres from local legends such as Oliver Mtukudzi and Leonard Dembo with their distinct Afro-fusion style.
Their albums, Tsambo and Nhungo, feature hits like “Vhunze,” “Daira Ndikuone,” and “Malaicha,” resonating deeply with fans both locally and internationally.
Known for regular performances at Theatre in the Park in Harare, the group has also toured cities across Zimbabwe and taken their sound to South Africa and Mozambique.
Their invitation to participate in the “East Meets South” project reflects their growing international appeal. Previous, Gwevedzi has collaborated with artistes from the Czech Republic and Brazil.
Their name, Gwevedzi, reflects this mission. Derived from Shona, it signifies a suitor’s role in strengthening bonds —similar to the band’s role in uniting people through music.
As they continue navigating the musical terrain, much is expected from the outfit, which has maintained its dominance over the years. With self-belief, innovation, and professionalism, Gwevedzi Redefined is no doubt one of the talented groups to watch in Zimbabwe. After all, they have nothing to prove—they are steadily building their fan base with the desire to conquer African and overseas markets.
