GREAT Zimbabwe University (GZU) has taken delivery of state-of-the-art medical equipment worth over US$500 000 from China, which will enhance the teaching of students at its Simon Mazorodze School of Medicine and Health Sciences while also boosting health delivery in Masvingo City and surrounding areas.
The development is in sync with President Mnangagwa’s call for universities in the country to be hotspots for solutions to community needs while also being engines for research, science, and innovation as Zimbabwe angles to attain upper middle-income economy status by 2030.
Besides equipping the university’s School of Medicine and Health Sciences, part of the equipment will also be used at the GZU Teaching Hospital in the mining town of Mashava and at Masvingo Provincial Hospital which is already in the process of being upgraded into a university teaching hospital.
GZU in March last year enrolled an initial group of 20 medical students marking yet another milestone in the university’s growth.
Among the equipment bought in China is a laparoscopy machine for use in keyhole surgery and this is the first such machine for Masvingo province.
The new equipment also includes dental equipment as well as DNA identity testing equipment, physiology, biotechnology and anatomy teaching and learning equipment.
