Athletics Board Track and Field Selection Meet.
HAB secretary general, Sailus Muringani, said they are using the event to select the team that will represent the province in the forthcoming National Youth Games in Gwanda from August 13 to 20.
“We are having the HAB selection event on Sunday. The selection will be for the National Youth Games. We expect not less than 300 athletes to take part in the competition.
“We had done our selection for the Youth Games basing on the Under-18 but there is different communication from the Sports Commission as they have said athletes born between January 1 1992 and December 31 1995 are suppose to compete.
“So we have to go back and focus on the Under-20,” said Muringani.
Muringani said they were going to select a provisional team of 80 athletes so that they have a broad base for the final selection of the team during the preparation process.
“We feel that if we have the selection event early it will give us a month for preparations.
“We are going to draw up a large list of 40 boys and 40 girls and then cut down the number during our preparations for the Games to the required 25 for each category,” said Muringani.
The HAB secretary-general said the competition was open to all athletes interested, including those from other provinces, as it will also act as a platform to select athletes to represent the nation at the All-Africa Games in September.
“We expect the competition to be tense. We are having all our athletes in the province, the likes of Mutanga (Tinashe).
“But competition will be open to everyone interested and we have Grace Gimo from Mutare and Tatenda Shumba from Mashonaland West who have confirmed their participation.
“We are offering the platform for the athletes to qualify for the All-Africa Games and for those who have already qualified they will be using the event as part of their preparations,” said Muringani.
Some the athletes expected to compete include Cliford Charuka, Tsitsi Mahachi and Taurai Muyambo who qualified for the World Youth Championships set for France from July 6 to 12 and will be using the event as part of their preparations.
World Wide Scholarships athletes Zuva Bvekerwa and Takudzwa Mhlanga are also expected to compete tomorrow.
