Several homesteads and a school were damaged when a hailstorm raced through Gumunyu village in Gokwe North on Tuesday, a fortnight after a similar storm in Gwebo area in the district.

The hailstorm which was accompanied by strong winds blew the roofs of classrooms and teachers cottages at Zanda Primary School.

Gokwe North District Development Coordinator who also chairs the District Civil Protection Unit, Mr Martin Musakanda said 12 families had their homesteads damaged.

He said seven teachers were left in the open after their houses had roofs blown away.

“The hailstorm, which came some days after another hailstorm that left about 20 families homeless, affected Zanda Primary School.

“As it stands, seven teachers were left without accommodation and are stranded,” said Mr Musakanda.

He said 12 families in Gumunyu area were also stranded after their properties were damaged.

“We had strong winds which blew off roofs in Gumunyu near Choda. There were 12 households which were affected and some are currently in the open,” said Mr Musakanda.

He said there were no casualties and the CPU was mobilising for resources to repair the damaged property.

“We are now mobilising resources so that we can repair the houses and classroom blocks that were affected. We are calling upon well-wishers to assist in any way that can be helpful especially shelter and food. We have an emergency and a crisis at once,” said Mr Musakanda.

Two weeks back another hailstorm destroyed homes, classroom blocks, shops and a police base in Gwebo area Gokwe North.
