Former Big Brother Africa – The Chase housemate Hakeem Mandaza has broadened his arts career through releasing a single titled “Gimme a Minute”.
In an interview with The Herald Entertainment, Hakeem was ecstatic about the single saying that it was the greatest thing ever to happen since he came out of the reality show last year.
“I am happy that I am doing what I wanted most, that is music. I grew up listening to artistes like Salif Keita, Femi Kuti, My Way and 2Face among others.
“I ventured into music last year soon after the reality show and took my time working on the track,” he said.
The 23-year-old artiste said the single would introduce him to the music industry.
“The reason why I released a single is to test the waters so as to introduce myself in the industry and see how the public responds. My principle concept in such business is to lay a foundation first before anything else of which the single is my introduction to music,” he said.
He said that the track is afro-pop and for the ones who love dancing.
“The title itself says it all. I am saying give me attention and opportunity to prove myself. Some people don’t believe that I can sing but that was my talent while growing up. I used to play a guitar and mbira at a tender age but dropped music at high school because wanted to focus much on my education.”
Hakeem said the single was recorded and mastered at Mix Masters Studio.
“It took me a day to write the song and it was recorded under Mix Masters. It was nice working with the team in the studio since I did my vocal training with SIMZ 27 from Mix Masters.”
He said he was working with some local artistes to promote his music.
“I am working with Willis Wataffi and Roki because of my genre which is afro-pop and the single will be launched later this week. We are also working on the video and remix with my brother Itayi who is much into hip-hop.”
Hakeem who has evaded limelight since he came out from BBA said he enjoys a private life.
“Naturally I am a very private person. I don’t believe in controversy on social media or doing things to get followers, postings on twitter and Facebook.
“I keep my life private. Actually I am a perfectionist, so I took my time in the studio because I am new and didn’t want to rush, releasing a half baked product.
“I have plans to expand my knowledge in music. It is a career path that I have chosen and I am happy to work with big names such as Wataffi and Roki.” he said.
Asked about if he would take another chance to go and represent the country in BBA this year, Hakeem said: “I would love to go back because it is about my country’s pride.”
The body-builder-cum-musician didn’t want to talk about his relationship status.
