A RECORD 15 Zimbabwean teams will take part in this year’s Umlazi junior handball tournament in Durban, South Africa, in December. The tournament is an annual event hosted by the Durban-based Umlazi Handball Club who, for the past three years or so, have been inviting Zimbabwean teams to take part in this competition. And Amon Madzvamuse, the president of the Zimbabwe Handball Federation, said yesterday that this year will see them sending 15 junior teams to this year’s Umlazi tournament which is set to run from December 5 to 12 and they will be mostly composed of players from local primary and high schools.
Kuwadzana of Banket, Bulawayo’s Northlea and Lobengula High Schools, Mukaro High School (Masvingo), Mufakose 4 High School (Harare), Houghton Park Primary School (Harare), Dingwizi (Manicaland), Zengeza 4 High School (Chitungwiza), Bradley High School (Bindura), Chinhoyi High School (Mashonaland West), Prospect Primary School (Harare), Glen View 7 Primary School (Harare), Churchill Boys High School (Harare) and Kwekwe High School have all been asked to send teams to this year’s Umlazi tournament in December.
They are expected to be joined at this tournament by a boys and girls team from Masvingo’s Danhamombe Handball Club. “We have already extended an invitation to all these schools to attend this year’s Umlazi tournament in Durban and this is the first time that we will be taking such a large number of teams to this year’s competition which I’m told will also attract teams from Zambia and Swaziland.
“We will also play teams from Pretoria and Johannesburg; and I think this year’s Umlazi tournament will be the biggest ever in terms of participating teams and players. The ZHF president said it is at Umlazi tournament where they will identify two national teams of 14 boys and an equal number of girls who they would like to represent Zimbabwe at next year’s Hanse Cup in Hamburg, Germany.
The Hanse Cup is one of Europe’s biggest youth handball tournaments and it is held annually in Hamburg during the Easter Holidays.
Mashrhino, a select side from Mashonaland West Province, have also been invited to take part in next year’s Hanse Cup after having made their debut appearance at the same tournament in April this year where they were hosted by the Hamburger Handball Association of Germany.
Meanwhile, Madzvamuse said they will also stage their annual President’s Trophy on September 26 at Houghton Park Primary School in Harare as part of their preparations for the Umlazi tournament.
Joanna Takapfuma, the co-ordinator of the President’s Trophy, has confirmed that all is set for them to stage this tournament which last year attracted senior teams from Mozambique and Angola.
