adminDurban — An animal anti-cruelty activist said she was still “having nightmares” after the discovery of two dogs which had been hung from a tree near Ladysmith on Monday. Annamarie Koen, of the Ladysmith Animal Anti-Cruelty League had responded to a report that dogs had been tied to the branches and was horrified by what she found.
“When we got there the dogs were still hanging and it was clear they had died a slow and horrible death, they were hung while they were still alive and asphyxiated slowly,” she said.
Koen said she and a colleague had cut the animals down from the tree, which lies adjacent to a district road in Driefontein. “We took a knife and cut the ropes which had suspended them in the tree and then I removed the ropes from around their necks.”
“I truly have no idea who would have the stomach to do something like this; I would hazard that they would have to be mentally disturbed.
“I don’t know what kind of person is able to look an animal in the eye before putting a rope around its neck and stringing it up while it struggles,” she said.
Koen added that as this point the culprits were still at large and could face animal cruelty charges.
She said it appeared that the dogs were hanged on Sunday, and that the incident was only reported on Monday. — News24
