THE traditional Christmas celebrations in Bulawayo which include a Nativity play and Carols by Candlelight are set to return this year following a Covid-19 sabbatical from 2020.

As per tradition, the City of Bulawayo will lead the festive season commemorations with diverse art and cultural showcases and artistes have been invited to showcase their different forms of art to audiences, free of charge.

In a statement issued by the Town Clerk, Christopher Dube on Tuesday, the Bulawayo City Council (BCC) is inviting artistes to register to take part at this year’s festive celebrations.

“It has been a practice over the years to organise functions or entertainment in the parks to mark the approach of the festive season in order to engender a joyous mood among the Bulawayo community at Christmas time. The City of Bulawayo is inviting churches, up-and-coming artists, individuals and other community associations who would like to stage free public entertainment to participate in the 2022 Christmas festivities in the parks.

“It is hoped that a varied programme can be arranged and suggestions include choirs, drama, poetry, band music and community singing among other forms of entertainment,” Dube said.

He said organisations are also invited to take part in the citywide programme. The Nativity play which is usually held at the Centenary Park in the Central Business District expands to other parks in the different wards.

“The activities will be extended to ward level and organisations are invited to participate in the citywide programme. Any group wishing to organise events of this nature should please indicate the day of the week, the time, and when they would like to stage the entertainment to the office of the Town Clerk.”

Ideas or requests should be sent to the Town Clerk by September 20. “Those interested in participating in the 2022 Christmas festivities in the parks can contact the director of Housing and community services through the Arts Culture and Heritage Officer, Mrs Charity Nyoni on [email protected]/[email protected] <mailto:[email protected]/[email protected]>,” said Dube. – @SeehYvonne
