Harare and Abidjan are exploring opportunities for city-level cooperation to address rapid urbanisation, infrastructure gaps and economic development as part of a broader, ongoing push for African cities to share expertise and build resilience.
The collaboration aims to foster knowledge sharing in urban management, sustainable development and economic resilience.
The Honorary Consul of Côte d’Ivoire in Zimbabwe, Mr Thembani Christopher Nkomo, met with Harare mayor, Councillor Jacob Mafume, yesterday at Town House, focusing on strengthening bilateral linkages between Harare and Abidjan, with emphasis on urban development, investment promotion and institutional collaboration.
Clr Mafume expressed interest in undertaking an official visit to Abidjan between September and October 2026 and requested the Honorary Consul’s support in facilitating a formal engagement in Côte d’Ivoire with the mayor of Abidjan.
The visit is expected to provide insights into Abidjan’s urban development trajectory, including the regulatory frameworks and transformation strategies that have shaped the city into a leading commercial centre in West Africa.
Mr Nkomo highlighted the value of dialogue in creating practical partnerships of mutual benefit.
“Cities are at the forefront of economic activity. Strengthening cooperation at this level can help connect businesses, institutions and communities across regions,” he said.
He emphasised the importance of practical, results-driven partnerships, noting that strengthened city-level cooperation creates opportunities to connect businesses, institutions, and communities across regions.
Discussions also touched on infrastructure, cultural exchange, and private sector engagement, with Harare offering opportunities to support broader regional integration.
With frameworks like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), city-level partnerships are expected to play an increasingly important role in fostering regional trade and shared economic growth.
The meeting signalled a continued commitment to strengthening ties, fostering collaboration, and advancing opportunities for shared economic growth between Harare and Abidjan.
