THE massive project to upgrade the Harare-Masvingo-Beitbridge Highway has entered its final stage, with only 53,2 kilometres left to complete the vital economic artery, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development announced on Tuesday.
The project, which is now 92 percent complete, has seen 528,8 kilometres of the road opened to traffic and the progress was marked over the weekend by the official opening of a new three-kilometre, four-lane section in the Ngundu area.
“In the final stretch. The finish line is in sight,” the ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.
“Just three days ago, we had 56,5km to go. Now, we are thrilled to announce that the Harare-Beitbridge Road Project is only 53,2km from completion.”
The highway is a flagship infrastructure development for Zimbabwe, linking the country to regional markets in South Africa and beyond.
Its near-completion promises to enhance trade, tourism and national development in line with the Government’s Vision 2030, while also providing safer and faster travel for road users.
The upgrade is being carried out by five contractor, namely; Bitumen World (125km completed), Fossil Contracting (118km completed), Masimba Holdings (98km completed), Exodus and Company (90.6km completed) and Tensor Systems (90km completed)
An additional 7.2km trial section has also been completed.
This project is part of the broader Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme 2 (ERRP2), which began in 2021, under which Government has refurbished over 50 000 kilometres of roads and repaired over 2 000 road structures nationwide.
Looking ahead, the Government has approved more than 20 major infrastructure projects set to commence in February 2026.
These include upgrades to key routes such as the Harare-Chirundu Road, Beitbridge-Bulawayo-Victoria Falls project and the Mutare-Masvingo Road, as part of its commitment to ensure “no one and no place is left behind.”
