The driver of a Timboon Coaches bus, whose video went viral on social media while being chased by a team of police officers as he recklessly drove against oncoming traffic, has appeared in court.

Maphosa Barnabas (49) appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Court for reckless driving in contravention of the Road Traffic Act.

On August 26, 2025, at approximately 11 am, Barnabas drove a Timboon Coaches bus recklessly in Harare’s central business district.

He drove against oncoming traffic at an undesignated point while attempting to pick up passengers.

Police in pursuit with sirens and beacons were forced to chase him as he drove on the pavement before reaching his garage in Msasa, where he was arrested. Barnabas was remanded to September 1, 2025, for bail application.

The National Prosecuting Authority said, “Reckless driving endangers lives and public safety. Public service drivers should adhere to traffic regulations.”
