THE Harare City Council has registered satisfaction with operations at the Geo Pomona Waste Management facility, describing them as impressive.

A delegation from the city council, led by acting town clerk Engineer Phakamile Mabhena Moyo, yesterday undertook a performance review visit to the site.

Speaking to the media after the tour, Eng Moyo commended the waste management firm for staying true to their word in transforming the former dumpsite.

“I think the work that is being done here is quite impressive, and it is according to what we envisaged right from the beginning.

“As you saw for yourself, the encapsulation has reduced the nuisance that the dump was creating (in the past),” he said.

Eng Moyo said they were now looking forward to the completion of the waste to energy plant.

Once complete, the ambitious plan is set to generate up to 22 megawatts of electricity, significantly contributing to Zimbabwe’s national grid and addressing the capital’s longstanding waste disposal challenges.

Eng Moyo said from the sorting and hazardous waste sections, they were now looking forward to the waste-to-energy component of the project.

He lauded Geo Pomona Waste Management for the on-going waste collection in and around Harare.

Waste collection services are set to continue improving as the firm deploys more machinery.

Government enlisted the services of the private firm to rescue residents following the local authority’s declaration of incapacity.

The deal expands on their existing partnership on managing the Pomona dumpsite.

“Waste collection is an ongoing thing. I understand there was delivery of the first lot of refuse compactors and tippers, and more equipment is on the way.

“So, we hope that the efficiency in waste collection will improve as more equipment comes through,” said Eng Moyo.
