Learning at Herentals College campus, at Sarum House along Robert Mugabe Road, came to a halt on Thursday morning as the Harare City Council closed the building as it intensifies its “Restore Order” operation in the central business district.

The closure disrupted learning as students and teachers were forced to vacate the building. When a Zimpapers team visited the college, the campus was unusually quiet.

One parent was engaging college officials inside the building.

“I came here after I received a call from my daughter, who told me that their lessons were interrupted due to the closure,” the parent said. “We are uncertain about when the college will reopen.”

The building was eventually reopened around lunchtime but officials at the reception expressed their frustration over the situation.

Tenants at several city various buildings have been counting their losses due to the failure of building owners and managers to comply with city regulations.

The City of Harare is urging all building owners to adhere to by-laws, which include timely payment of rates, installation of fire extinguishers, and obtaining the necessary licenses.
