THE City of Harare has pledged to strengthen support for its partner, Geo Pomona Waste Management, following a familiarisation tour of the waste-to-energy facility by the council’s water, sanitation and hygiene committee.

Harare City Council Acting Town Clerk Advocate Warren Sean Chiwawa said councillors were impressed by the progress at the facility.

“Basically, it is just a familiarisation tour for City of Harare’s water, sanitation and hygiene Committee for them to appreciate the work that has been done so far by our partner Geo Pomona.

“We are happy; the committee is happy with the work here. We have seen the sorting plant, state-of-the-art and the biggest in Southern Africa,” said Adv Chiwawa.

“The progress so far is very magnificent and as a city, we are going to offer our support to Geo Pomona and we are also going to report back to the mayor (Councillor Jacon Mafume).”

Geo Pomona Waste Management chief executive officer and executive chairman Dr Dilesh Nguwaya said the visit provided councillors with an opportunity to appreciate the work being carried out at the facility.

“They are here to see and appreciate the work we have been doing as Geo Pomona. This is the first time for councillors to come and see what we are doing here,” said Dr Nguwaya.

“They are very happy with the progress; they want us to continue and even expand it to other cities.

“Also, the city council is very happy with the way we are treating their workers who are seconded to Geo Pomona.”

The City of Harare has seconded about 540 workers to Geo Pomona.

In total, the company now employs 1 200 employees.
