Harare mayor, Councillor Jacob Mafume, says the council will redesign and redirect the sewer lines at the corner of Kaguvi Street and Abercorn Street to resolve recurrent problems at the site.

Cllr Mafume on his Facebook page said council has bought the equipment required and the problem should be cleared within two weeks.

“We have bought the equipment our workers need including but not limited to 13m ladders, wenches, oxygen tanks etc,” he said.

“We will redesign and redirect the sewer from this area to avoid such faults. We will also raise it from the current 13m depths”.

“The manhole is 13metres deep to get to the sewer pipes. The sewer system was done in the 1940s using Italian prisoners at war. “The pipes are clogged with clothes, blankets ‘rags and all sorts of materials people use in that area in place of paper tissues.”

He said the city has retrained its workers and improved safety equipment following the death of two of its workers due to suffocation.
