Harare demolishes encroaching properties in New Canaan to combat flooding

The City of Harare demolished structures blocking water drains at garden flats in New Canaan, Highfield on Friday.

Ward 25 Highfield Councillor Jane Bhingari stated that the area is prone to flooding. “When it rained, the water reached knee level. Beds and sofas were soaked in water.

“We have conducted our investigations; we invited the district officer, the roads department, town planning department, and surveying team here on Wednesday to investigate the cause,” she said.

Councillor Bhingari explained that there was a service lane with a drainage system located between the garden flats and a church. “They built up to the perimeter wall of the church, resulting in flooding in the houses. Following our investigations, we decided to open up the drainage system.

“We spoke with the residents and informed them that they needed to remove their perimeter walls. Council machines were here earlier to demolish, but we spoke to the residents, as we are not at war with them, and told them that those who encroached on council land should remove their structures.

“The council is working to open up the drainage system, so I believe that in the next rains, there won’t be any flooding,” she added.
