Harare descends on cyclists

The Harare City Council has warned cyclists to license their bicycles or risk arrest.

City spokesperson Mr Michael Chideme told The Herald that it was still mandatory to license bicycles.

“Bicycle owners who use city roads and cycle lanes are advised that the traditional bike licences are mandatory and should be respected,” he said. “Council wants to use the funds to maintain the cycle lanes and attendant services for the cycling public.”

Mr Chideme said bicycle licensing had been suspended for some years.

“Over the years, the fee had been neglected and cyclists had assumed it was scrapped off our books,” said Mr Chideme. “All those who own bikes are to go to the district offices and register, as well as license their bicycles.”
