Harare’s up and coming arts and entertainment performers have a free platform on which to showcase their talent with the hosting by The Repertory Players of this year’s edition of the Harare has Got Talent show.Harare has Got Talent has been an annual show on the programme at Reps Theatre since 2008, serving as a platform for aspiring performers to be seen, not just for the purposes of getting into shows at Reps, but also in being ‘discovered’ by directors, impresarios and other people in search of bright new singers, dancers, actors, comedians and specialist performers of all kinds.
“This year’s Harare has Got Talent is number eight in the series and will be staged at Reps Theatre on Saturday February 7, where it is hoped a selection of performers will show us the enormous depth of talent that exists in Harare,” said Sue Bolt, who chairs the Repertory Players and the Reps production committee.
Auditions for the show take place at Reps this weekend and any performers who would like to showcase their talent are invited to join in one of the audition sessions in the hope of making into the big show. The first audition is at 2pm on Saturday January 24 and the second is at 11am on Sunday January 25, both taking place on the Reps main stage — entry is through the secure car park at the theatre rear.
“Everyone is welcome to try out for the show, but they must realise that this is meant as a service to the community and although we have modest prizes for a winner and runners-up, the real purpose is to provide a platform for performers of all kinds to be seen and, we hope, snapped up by directors and others who need to constantly source new faces for the local arts and entertainment scene,” said Bolt.
“Similarly, we hope for a good attendance at the show on February 7, so that supporters can give a boost to their chosen acts and so that people in the community who need to source talent can come along and in the comfort of their seats witness the talent in action.”While most of the performers are likely to be singers, the organisers are also hoping for dancers, dance groups, bands, musical ensembles, choirs and people with specialised entertainment skills — from illusionists and jugglers to unicyclists and everything else in between.
“The auditions are open to everyone — whether a school student who can sing or dance, or a performer already doing gigs around town, or even someone older who has never really tried to be seen on stage; let’s get a good look at how much talent there is in our capital city,” she said.
As Harare has Got Talent 8 is likely to be well-supported by audience members, advance booking is recommended and this can be done at The Spotlight in the Reps Theatre foyer, open Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm and on Saturdays from 9am to 12 noon.
