Harare is implementing a strategic water plan, which is expected to ensure sufficient water supplies to Harare residents up to year 2030
In an interview with The Herald last week, Harare City Council spokesperson Mr Michael Chideme said their immediate plan under the 12-year strategy was to reduce water loss.
“The immediate action we are taking on the water strategy is non-revenue water reduction. We are saying our non-revenue water is around 60 percent and there are issues that we are looking at to reduce that figure,” he said.
“We have prioritised principal management of pressure in the system; if we optimise our pressure we should be able to reduce water losses,” he said.
“The 60 percent non-revenue water is comprised of physical losses, which is the water that we actually use and there are commercial losses, which are a result of under-registering of meters, some illegal connections and sub-billing in accuracy.”
He added that they had already seen some results in areas where they had implemented interventions to reduce water losses.
“We did it in Sunningdale. We reduced the water pressure in a particular zone and losses were reduced by 50 percent in that area.”
