Harare inmates receive 30t sugar

Tongaat Hulett yesterday donated 30 tonnes of sugar to inmates at Harare Central Remand Prison.

Speaking during the acceptance ceremony of the donation, Zimbabwe Prison and Correctional Services (ZPCS) Commissioner-General Paradzai Zimondi said the donation would help the inmates, since the ZPCS was facing some challenges.

“This donation has come at the right time when ZPCS is experiencing some challenges in providing inmates’ with wholesome rations as per the approved dietary scale due to some budgetary constraints,” he said.

“As a result of this donation, we are guaranteed of a full month’s sugar supply across the service.

“This gives us some breathing space and affords us an opportunity to look at other critical areas. Donation of this magnitude, among other forms, will continue to be appreciated and cherished, particularly when directed towards enhancing inmates’ general well-being.”

Comm-Gen Zimondi appealed for assistance in the provision of ration and capacitation of its workshops and farms where some skills transfer programmes were being undertaken.

“The ZPCS sincerely welcomes all willing individuals, persons or group, faith based organisation and the business community at large who are committed to partner us in making a great change to the welfare of our parents, brothers, sisters, relatives and friends who are incarcerated,” he said.

Tongaat Hulett managing director Mr Sydney Mutsambiwa said the company was happy to assist the ZPCS.

“I would like to thank the ZPCS for giving us a chance to help the inmates,” he said.
