THE annual Golden Pilsner Harare Open Golf Championship tees off this morning at Chapman Golf Club with a record 60 professionals taking to the greens. Nine South Africans have also confirmed their participation with Hwange Open champion, Musiwalo Nethunzwi among the favourites to win his second title on Zimbabwe soil in two months.
Nethunzwi turned professional in 2013 and is a product of the Big Easy tournaments. The past two years have been a learning experience for the 24-year-old who turned professional in 2013 after winning the Free State and Northern Cape opens as an amateur.
He is a regular on the Zambezi Tour and has quickly learnt that it takes a combination of talent and hard work to succeed. He clearly demonstrated this by winning the 2014 Hwange Open.
“We’ve a record of 60 professional entries for the event which has a prize fund of $20,000. The Hwange Open champion Musiwalo Nethunzwi has entered. Our Zimbabwean, South African-based players namely Greg Bentley and Mick Hough have also entered the event,” said Tendayi Gwatiringa the Zambezi tour marketing and communications director.
Bulawayo boys Phillip Tshuma and Brian Gondo are also expected to be part of the big entourage in the capital.
The Harare Open is the third official tour event of the year. According to Gwatiringa, the 54-hole championship will adopt a stroke play format with the winner set to emerge on Saturday.
