Sports Association in Zimbabwe after winning a gold medal in the games held in Kwekwe over the weekend.
They beat Mutare Polytechnic 3-1 in the final to clinch the title for the third consecutive year.
The champions found their goals through Tichaona Maswimbo, Kasimero Chimbadzu and Henry Chuma while their opponents replied through Batsirai Mutetwa. Earlier on, Harare Polytechnic had beaten Kwekwe 5-4 on penalties in the semi-finals after the match ended in a 0-0 draw after regulation time. Mutare beat Bulawayo Polytechnic 1-0 in the other semi-final. Harare Polytechnic coach Misheck Phiri applauded his charges for a job welldone.
“The boys played well, they were playing according to instructions. We worked very hard to win this game. We had some problems on finishing but we managed to win,” said Phiri.
His counterpart, Kilson Manase, conceded defeat but accused the match officials of bad officiating.
“The competition was okay except that we had some hiccups with the referees as some of the officiating was very poor. However, we lost to a better team. It was a tough game but we played well,” said Manase.
Harare Polytechnic also dominated in athletics as they collected 12 medals – eight gold, one silver and three bronze – while Bulawayo Polytechnic came second with 14 medals – five gold, seven silver and two bronze. Gweru Polytechnic also had 14 medals including five bronze. Harare Polytechnic also scooped gold medals in men’s chess and in the men’s basketball when they beat Kwekwe 50-49 in a tightly-contested match. Bulawayo Polytechnic women’s chess team won a gold medal. Kushinga Pikelela were crowned the new netball champions after beating holders Mutare 24-17. Kwekwe walked away with the women’s tennis title while Bulawayo and Masvingo won the silver and bronze medals respectively. TESAZ marketing officer, Tsitsi Kufa, was impressed with the level of competition as she said there was an improvement on the standards with their 10 affiliates fielding well represented teams in different disciplines.
“There has been great improvement in most of the disciplines as the institutions managed to field athletes in most disciplines. The turnout was very high and the institutions were very supportive,” said Kufa.
However, most of the institutions failed to bring in their rugby teams and only Bulawayo and Masvingo fielded their teams. The former will be representing TESAZ in the ZITSU games.
The games attracted participants from Bulawayo, Mutare, Gweru, Kushinga Pikelela, Msasa, School of Mines, Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo, Harare and Kwekwe. The TESAZ games were being used to select the team that will take part in the Zimbabwe Tertiary Institution Sports Union games to be held later this year.
