PREPARATIONS for Harare’s 46th Independence celebrations, which will be held at St Aidan School in Chitungwiza, are at an advanced stage.
In an interview yesterday, Minister of State for Harare Metropolitan Provincial Affairs and Devolution Senator Charles Tawengwa said they are well ahead of schedule in their planning.
“Preparations for the Independence commemorations are well course. Last year we commemorated Independence in Epworth and this year we will be in Chitungwiza, at St Aidan School,” said Minister Tawengwa.
He said the choice of venue is in line with the bold decision by the Second Republic to decentralise key national events.
“As you are aware that President Mnangagwa said that we rotate, to ensure everyone has access to national events, under the mantra leaving no one and no place behind.
“As Independence Day approaches, Harare Province is preparing for the historic event. We invite everyone to attend in large numbers so that we can celebrate our Independence Day as a united people: one nation, one Harare Metropolitan Province,’’ he said.
The celebrations will be held under the theme, “Zimbabwe at 46, Unity in action and development in motion towards Vision 2030.”
Last Friday, the Province held a meeting where updates were given to the provincial leadership. “We were briefed that everything is on course and we are hoping that we will also be able to have helicopter displays in that area,” he said.
The main national celebrations for the 46th Independence anniversary will take place in Maphisa District, Matabeleland South Province.
The selection of Maphisa underscored the Government’s commitment to inclusivity and national unity and ensures that every region can meaningfully share in the fruits of the country’s hard-won independence and ongoing development.
The occasion will also celebrate the peaceful environment prevailing in the country. “Water and sewage infrastructure are also being upgraded, and the Kunzvi Dam project is now very close to completion, among others” noted Minister Tawengwa.
