A HARARE salon was last week attacked by unknown assailants with a car belonging to the owner also being burnt down, in what police have said could be people reacting to the illegal activities happening at the premise.
The salon has of late been the subject of controversy after numerous complains that the owner was using it as a meeting place for members of the LGBTI community.
The salon is located at corner Nelson Mandela and Chinhoyi Street is owned by Glodine Rumbidzai Nyanhongo.
“We have been receiving numerous complaints regarding the clientel of that particular salon. We even arrested the owner where we charged her with public nuisance.
“What was happening is that this lady was servicing mainly the LGBTI community where they were now also using the premise to conduct illegal gatherings. Therefore when the salon was attacked it did not come as a surprise to us because of the numerous complaints we have been receiving regarding the business there,” said a police source.
Efforts to get a comment from Nyanhongo were fruitless as her mobile phone was not reachable.
However this publication managed to track one of the salon’s employees who confirned the attack.
“People have been constantly attacking the salon and even sending us threats but what they did not understand is that we were just in business and did not discriminate on who we served, our crime is just that we were favoured by a certain section of society.
“This time however went a bit overboard as not only did they attack the salon but they also burnt down the boss’ car, which is now making us to leave in fear,” said the employee on condition of anonymity fearing victimisation.
