“The city won the innovation award in creativity in terms of securing the US$144 million from China for water and sewer, securing US$15 million from BancABC to capacitate the amenities department and for securing a grant from the African Development Bank to fund Harare’s water and sewerage works,” he said.
He said the city was also honoured for completing Kuwadzana Clinic which was left incomplete when the World Bank withdrew funding for capital projects.
“The point was, under difficult conditions we were able to capacitate ourselves with our own bankable projects. We were able to attract financiers,” he said.
However, the Chinese loan was still be disbursed. Once disbursed, city authorities say water shortages would be significantly reduced. The loan from BancABC was used to purchase refuse trucks that are already in use.
The city showcased a number of business opportunities in the capital. Local authorities attend the premier business show to sell their products and to invite partners to invest in their areas.
