HARARE Metropolitan Province, with a population of slightly above two million, needs an additional 150 clinics to service its
people fully, Harare Provincial Medical Director, Dr Innocent Hove has said.
Dr Hove was speaking during Harare Metropolitan Province’s four-day strategic workshop in Chinhoyi.
He said the province only has 58 clinics.
“According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), there should be at least two clinics per 10 000 people,” he said.
“As it stands, we have 58 clinics, which is a drop in the ocean. We need at least 200 clinics to cater for our population of two
million people,” he said.
Dr Hove also noted that the province has 600 000 illegal settlers who have no access to potable water and sewer services.
“This is a recipe for disaster and a ticking time bomb for diseases.”
He also highlighted that there is need to increase the ambulance fleet to enhance the city’s ability to respond to emergencies.
The strategic workshop which ends on Friday seeks to formulate strategies that will address the capital’s challenges in line with
Vision 2030.
It is also expected to look into the provincial economic development planning principles and guidelines.
On Monday provincial heads reported on their departments’ performance against set targets and made some recommendations
for the way forward.
