cost of US$15 million.
Cleveland Dam is situated about 12 kilometres outside the capital to the east, along the Harare-Mutare highway.
The dam is easily accessible and offers a wide variety of habitats, which, though inevitably somewhat disturbed, still yield a rich assortment of interesting species.
A City of Harare official who declined to be named said Cleveland was chosen because of its proximity to the city.
“We want to upgrade the facility into a modern park with a golf course and state- of-the-art lodges. The presence of a dam there will also make it a true tourist attraction since more activities will be found there,” he said.
“All in all, we are looking towards spending US$15 million on the project and work is expected to start soon,” he said.
The source said the Botswana firm was bringing in the capital, while the City of Harare would provide the infrastructure. The resort would comprise the municipal area of Cleveland Dam in the southwestern part and Haka Game Park to the north. “These areas remain reasonably undisturbed,” said the source. “On the northern side are various specialist areas such as rifle ranges and racing
tracks.”
Harare Municipality has previously partnered a South African firm to form a company, Easipark, to manage parking areas in the city. – New Ziana.
