A Harare woman has obtained a protection order against her son following allegations of recurring violence, harassment and disrespect.

Ms Tendai Kangurwa told the Harare Civil Court that her son, Ronald Gochera, had developed a disturbing pattern of violent and disruptive behaviour.

Appearing before magistrate Meenal Narotam, Kangurwa alleged that her son had on three occasions vandalised property in her house, including plates and glasses, during angry outbursts.

“At one point, he threw a gas cylinder onto the house, damaging the roof,” she said.

She described him as someone disrespectful and insulting. She said he was refusing to be reprimanded by her.

“He doesn’t respect me, he insults me whenever I try to reprimand him, telling me that I’m not his mother and I should get away,” she said.

She told the court that she wants her son to respect her as her mother and breadwinner of the house and stop his wild behaviour.

Kangurwa said she is living in constant fear and was failing to find peace in her own home, which led her to demand that her son move out.

However, the court ruled that it lacked eviction powers and advised her to seek assistance from the Civil General Office to file for his eviction.

The respondent, Ronald Gochera, did not deny the allegations and agreed to move out of their rental home within a month.

Magistrate Meenal Narotam granted the order stipulating that Ronald must refrain from being violent, emotionally and verbally abusing his mother.

He was also advised to maintain respect for her and to address any disputes peacefully.
