Hardrock’s title charge faces Bosso test

HARDROCK’S Castle Lager Premier Soccer League title charge faces a stern test when they visit Highlanders at Barbourfields Stadium on Saturday in one of the most anticipated fixtures of the season.

The match carries significance for both sides, although the stakes are arguably higher for Hardrock, who are locked in a tight title race with defending champions Scottland.

Scottland lead the standings on 58 points, with Hardrock just a point behind, leaving little room for dropped points as the season enters a crucial stage.

For Highlanders, the immediate objective is different. Bosso will be looking to finish as high as possible on the log standings, and a home victory against one of the leading sides would provide a major boost to those ambitions.

Highlanders will also take confidence from the first meeting between the two sides, where they stunned Hardrock 1-0 at Chahwanda Stadium.

Reason Sibanda was the difference between the teams on that occasion, coming off the bench to produce a brilliant acrobatic finish against the run of play.

That result demonstrated Highlanders’ ability to hurt Hardrock even when they are not dominating possession or territory, something Kaindu’s charges will be mindful of when they walk out at Barbourfields.

The second meeting promises to be a different proposition, particularly with Hardrock fighting to keep pace with Scottland at the top of the standings.

Every point matters at this stage of the campaign, and Hardrock cannot afford to drop points if they are to maintain pressure on the defending champions.

Highlanders, however, will have little reason to make life easy for their visitors.

Playing in front of their home support, Bosso will be eager to turn the occasion into an opportunity to strengthen their own position and finish the campaign on a high.

The first-leg victory gives Highlanders psychological confidence, but Saturday’s encounter will demand another disciplined performance if they are to complete a league double over the title contenders.

For Kaindu, the return to Barbourfields adds a personal subplot to an already significant fixture, but his immediate concern will be ensuring Hardrock leave Bulawayo with points that could prove invaluable in the title race.

With Scottland sitting just one point clear at the summit, Hardrock know that anything less than a positive result could hand the defending champions an advantage. Highlanders, meanwhile, will be hoping their home advantage and memories of the first-leg triumph can help them derail the visitors’ title ambitions.
