Dr Hargreaves, who died last week after a long battle with renal cancer, was buried at his farm in Norton farm.
He served Government for 41 years in the department of livestock and veterinary services where he was principal director.
Dr Hargreaves had an interest in assisting rural and smallholder farmers.
Cde Gumbo said all the members hailed Dr Hargreaves for the role he played in the veterinary sector.
“We also deliberated on the hero status of Dr Hargreaves who served us well for many years. Everyone who spoke agreed that we were supposed to honour him by declaring him a liberation hero,” Cde Gumbo said.
Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development Minister Joseph Made hailed the Politburo for recognising Dr Hargreaves’ contribution.
He spoke glowingly of the late liberation hero said he had committed to serve Zimbabwe at a time when other white agriculture specialists left the country.
“He was a veterinary surgeon who had immense experience and depth of his knowledge but he distinguished himself when other white surgeons left the veterinary service thinking that it would collapse.
Dr Hargreaves saw no colour, creed or religion. He only saw himself as a true Zimbabwean. At the international forum, Dr Hargreaves would first raise the Zimbabwean flag high,” Minister Made said.
