THE country should continue to invest in sporting activities as they immensely contribute to economic growth and development, while also bolstering the attainment of Vision 2030, Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga has said.
In a speech read on his behalf by Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri at this year’s Republic Cup Trust horse race at the Borrowdale Race Course in Harare yesterday, VP Chiwenga said sport not only unifies but also contributes to people’s well-being.
“In developing NDS1 (National Development Strategy 1), His Excellency, the President, insisted that enhanced citizen involvement in sports be included as one of the national key result areas outcomes,” he said.
“This not only fulfils his own inclusive policy but also ensures Zimbabwe’s long-term prosperity as every dollar invested in sport and recreation has the potential for compounded returns in increased health, productivity and unification of our people.
“In addition to promoting sporting activities through the horse race, you also ensure access to food and social amenities to all and improve wellness and the quality of life of Zimbabweans. These factors are essential ingredients for the attainment of Vision 2030.”
VP Chiwenga applauded the late chairperson of the Republic Cup Trust, Mr Kamal Khalfan, for elevating the lives of vulnerable people in communities.
He said Mr Khalfan’s work was in line with the Second Republic’s thrust of not leaving anyone and any place behind.
“It is pleasing to note that over the past 26 years, the Republic Cup Trust has continued to exhibit a commitment to elevate the lives of many people in our communities through donations to various charities and the needy in our society,” said VP Chiwenga.
“You may be aware that this year’s charity horse race comes after the untimely demise of the chairperson of the Republic Cup Trust, Mr Khalfan, in May this year.
“Mr Kalfan was the honorary consul of the Sultanate of Oman to Zimbabwe. He had the tremendous vision of assisting the needy and underprivileged in our society.
“We are grateful for his endeavour and, as we hold this charity event, we are with him in spirit. May his dear soul continue to rest in peace.”
Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere, senior Government officials and Republic Cup trustees were among the dignitaries at the event.
