LONDON. – England star Harry Maguire’s World Cup dreams hang in the balance after his Mykonos brawl conviction was upheld.
The Manchester United centre-back was already facing an uphill battle after falling down the pecking order under Thomas Tuchel, but his chances are now increasingly slim.
Maguire, who turns 33 tomorrow, was cruelly blasted as “arrogant” by prosecuting lawyer Ioannis Paradisis after failing to overturn a 2020 conviction for assault and bribery.
The footie ace had been protecting his sister when the supposed bust-up occurred and his lawyers were given just two hours to prepare his case.
Maguire has vehemently protested his innocence. His legal team cannot appeal the conviction anymore but will be permitted to argue points of law at a higher court.
The result is likely to jeopardise his chances of making the England squad for this summer‘s World Cup.
He will have to declare the conviction to obtain a visa for the tournament in the US and Mexico.
The FA declined to comment when approached by The Sun.
Maguire has won 64 England caps, memorably scoring a bullet header against Sweden at the 2018 World Cup to help fire his country to only their second-ever semi-final at football’s grandest stage. – The Sun
