Democratic Opposition Party (DOP) leader Mr Harry Peter Wilson has promised to declare a three-day national holiday if he emerges victorious in the upcoming presidential election in Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe goes to the polls on this Wednesday, 23 August.
Mr Wilson, known for his charismatic and unconventional approach to politics, expressed his commitment to rejuvenating the spirit of the nation by providing citizens with a much-needed break following the tense election season.
“While politics can be serious business, it’s also essential to find joy and togetherness in the midst of our democratic processes. If I am elected as president, I promise to declare a three-day holiday so that every Zimbabwean can celebrate, reflect, and recharge for the journey ahead.
“I believe that the hardworking people of Zimbabwe deserve a break from their daily struggles. That’s why, upon winning the presidential elections, we will need three days of celebrations,” Mr Wilson said.
Mr Wilson said he is aware that his promise will strike a chord with some voters who view it as a refreshing departure from the usual political promises while others will raise concerns about the practicality of implementing such a nationwide holiday. He said critics will argue that Zimbabwe’s economy and public services could face strain due to a sudden halt in activity, potentially leading to unintended consequences.
“This is not just about taking time off work. It’s about revitalising our nation’s spirit, fostering unity, and recognising the efforts of the Zimbabwean people. I firmly believe that a brief respite can have a positive impact on our collective well-being,” he asserted.
Mr Wilson said the idea of a national holiday is appealing to many.
“I know some will say it is crucial for voters to evaluate the practicality of such a promise. They will say presidential candidates need to be transparent about their plans for the economy, healthcare, and education, rather than focusing solely on symbolic gestures. This is not a symbolic gesture. We are going to have a three-day holiday then after that we will get down to serious work,” he said.
Mr Wilson said he has the best plan to take Zimbabwe forward.
“As the election date approaches, Zimbabweans are faced with a decision that goes beyond mere promises. They must carefully assess the candidates’ platforms and track records to determine who has the best plan for addressing the nation’s pressing issues while still finding room for moments of unity and celebration. And I believe I am the only candidate that has all the answers to the nation’s questions,” he said.
