HAVE copyright specialists, InTotal Band, replaced South African dance goddess Makhadzi at Alick Macheso’s festival?
InTotal Band are riding on a wave of growing popularity and the outfit have become one of Zimbabwe’s most sought-after live bands.
They are earning rave reviews for their polished performances and ability to breathe new life into timeless classics.
The band have built an impressive reputation both locally and internationally, making them a natural choice for high-profile events.
Their latest milestone is a slot at the inaugural Cheso Power Festival, set for July 31 in Harare.
They will join a star-studded line-up in celebrating sungura icon Macheso.
Their inclusion has come at a time when uncertainty continues to surround South African star Makhadzi’s participation.
That has become the big question – have In Total Band replaced Makhadzi at the festival?
No one is saying anything officially at the moment but their inclusion on the programme is generating a lot of speculation.
South African artists have not performed in Zimbabwe since the latest round of xenophobic attacks erupted in Mzansi.
Zimbabwean artists have also not performed in South Africa since the start of these xenophobic attacks.
Makhadzi was expected to be the one who was going to break the ice but that doesn’t appear likely if the changes to the festival flier are anything to go by.
Makhadzi’s proposed appearance at the festival, which is meant to celebrate Macheso’s life and musical legacy, has been uncertain for sometime now.
Some local influencers and activists, including socialite and comedienne Mai TT have been lobbying for Makhadzi to be barred from performing in Zimbabwe.
They argue that the singer should only perform once normalcy returns in South Africa, where thousands of Zimbabweans have been displaced.
Macheso also cancelled a recent performance in Limpopo Province, citing concerns over the safety and security of both his fans and his team.
In Total Band appear to be the biggest beneficiaries.
The band’s core members include saxophonist Joseph Chinouriri, Takakunda Mukundu (guitar), Naphtali Gurity Chivandikwa (bass guitar), Mthandazo Ian Bhebhe (piano) and Nkosana Samuel Hamandishe (drums).
“We have added the copyright outfit In Total Band because the group resonates with the Cheso Power Festival audience,” said one of the event organisers.
“Besides the group’s capacity to entertain fans with a wide selection of timeless classics, we assure attendees of an unforgettable night of entertainment.
“Preparations are progressing well, and all the participating artists are eager to perform.
“If there are any changes, we will communicate them in due course.”
The band will share the stage at Alex Sports Club with an impressive line-up that includes Kurai Makore, Freeman, Peter Moyo, Ndolwane Super Sounds, Bling 4, Xiba, Chillspot Family, Tocky Vibes and Killer T.
At 58, Macheso has led Orchestra Mberikwazvo for 28 years and has remained one of the country’s most influential musicians for nearly three decades.
The inaugural Cheso Power Festival seeks to honour that remarkable journey.
