A 55-YEAR-OLD man from Hauna Phase 3 under Chief Mutasa in Honde Valley died last Friday after allegedly consuming excessive amounts of whisky.
Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, confirmed the incident, and identified the deceased as Peter Mutenure.
Assistant Inspector Chinyoka said the incident began on August 21 when Joseph Chinjikupi returned home from Hauna Business Centre and found Mutenure drinking whisky.
“On August 21 at around 4pm, Chinjikupi left Hauna Business Centre, and upon arriving at his homestead, found Peter Mutenure drinking whisky,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
The two later set off for Hauna Business Centre together. However, along the way, Mutenure reportedly started feeling weak and began sweating profusely.
“While they were travelling to Hauna Business Centre, Mutenure suddenly became weak and started sweating. Chinjikupi hired a passing tricycle ridden by Likkle Nyandoro (23), of the same village, and asked him to take them to Hauna District Hospital,” he said.
Mutenure was rushed to Hauna District Hospital, where medical personnel pronounced him dead upon arrival.
Chinjikupi subsequently reported the matter to the police, prompting officers to attend the scene and launched investigations.
“Upon arrival at the hospital, Mutenure was pronounced dead. Chinjikupi reported the case to the police and preliminary investigations revealed no visible injuries on the body,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
Police have since urged members of the public to exercise restraint when consuming alcohol and to seek urgent medical attention whenever they experience alarming symptoms after drinking.
“We urge people to drink responsibly and avoid excessive alcohol consumption. Alcohol abuse is one of the factors contributing to unnecessary loss of life and is also linked to domestic violence and road traffic accidents,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
He also called on families and communities to play a more active role in discouraging harmful drinking habits and encouraging individuals struggling with alcohol-related problems to seek help.
