Hawkflight marks 2 decades of delivering affordable housing

HAWKFLIGHT Enterprises (Pvt) Ltd has emerged over the past two decades as one of Zimbabwe’s most consistent players in the construction and property development sector.

Established in 2000, the company has grown from a modest civil engineering outfit focused primarily on servicing residential stands into a diversified enterprise delivering housing schemes, commercial buildings, transport solutions and infrastructure development across the country.

From its early beginnings, the company’s core mandate was centred on the servicing of virgin land and the development of both residential and commercial properties. However, over the years, Hawkflight has expanded its operations in response to growing demand, evolving economic conditions and the national housing backlog.

Today, the firm operates across multiple sectors, combining construction expertise with manufacturing and logistics capabilities.

One of the company’s most recognised achievements is its involvement in the development of Cowdray Park Phase 1 (Hawkflight) in Bulawayo, an area which, in many respects, reflects the scale and ambition of its work. According to the company, it acquired previously undeveloped land from the local authority, serviced it in line with approved specifications, and played a central role in transforming it into a functional residential community. The area’s development has since become a reference point for the company’s capacity to deliver large-scale housing solutions.

Speaking on the company’s operations and philosophy, Hawkflight’s operations manager Mr Martin Moyo, emphasised the firm’s broad-based approach and its commitment to inclusivity in housing provision.

Mr Moyo said the company’s strength lies in its ability to accommodate different income groups through flexible housing schemes. He explained that affordability remains central to their model, particularly for low-income earners who are often excluded from formal housing markets.

“The company is accommodative as it has got a housing scheme which caters for all groups of people,” he said.

Mr Moyo further noted that Hawkflight’s payment structures are designed to reduce barriers to home ownership. Clients are typically required to make an initial deposit of US$3 500 with the house delivered within a period of three months, while the duration of payments is 18 years.

The model has enabled many families to enter the property market who would otherwise have been excluded due to financial constraints.

Mr Moyo said the approach is part of the company’s broader commitment to addressing Zimbabwe’s housing backlog through practical and long-term solutions.

Since its establishment, Hawkflight has also diversified its operations beyond residential development. The company now offers what it describes as turnkey solutions, covering the full spectrum of construction and infrastructure needs for clients ranging from private individuals to institutions such as churches and businesses.

Mr Moyo explained that the organisation places strong emphasis on understanding client requirements and translating them into functional designs that comply with both industry standards and national regulations.

“Hawkflight offers turnkey solutions to the transport and construction needs of our diverse clientele who include businesses, churches and individuals in both low density and high density areas.

“It attaches great importance to identifying clients’ specific needs and desires so that they are factored into building designs and the final construction whilst striving to maintain standards as dictated by the industry best practices and national laws,” he said.

A notable feature of the company’s operations is its in-house production of construction materials through its Devsan Trading Division. This strategy, according to management, helps to control costs and maintain affordability in its housing projects. By manufacturing bricks and other building materials internally, the company is able to stabilise prices and improve efficiency across its construction pipeline.

Additionally, Hawkflight is a member of the Construction Industry Federation of Zimbabwe (CIFOZ), a professional body that regulates and supports best practices within the sector. Membership, the company says, reflects its commitment to maintaining professional standards and adhering to industry regulations.

Mr Moyo also highlighted the company’s commitment to innovation and quality assurance, noting that its technical teams continuously work to identify and eliminate potential project risks.

“Identifying and eliminating potential problems, coupled with an innovative design approach, are the hallmarks of our practice and we manufacture our own bricks and other building materials,” he said.

Beyond construction, Hawkflight places strong emphasis on environmental responsibility and corporate governance.

The company strives to adhere to national environmental laws and international best practices in waste management and sustainability, working closely with the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) on environmental awareness programmes, including participation in national clean-up campaigns aligned with Government initiatives.

Corporate social responsibility forms another key pillar of the company’s identity. Hawkflight has supported vulnerable communities, including child-headed households affected by poverty and the HIV and Aids pandemic. In one of its most notable interventions, the company donated two houses to orphans during World Habitat Day commemorations under the Ministry of National Housing and Social Amenities.

Mr Moyo said the company’s social responsibility programme extends beyond housing donations to include education and skills development support.

“We promote education by supporting underprivileged children by paying fees. We also extend practical and technical support to the vocational training centres and the National University of Science and Technology in taking students for attachment. Thus we are more into the people,” he said.

Hawkflight is engaged in several active construction projects across Bulawayo and surrounding areas. These include individual residential developments in both high-density and low-density suburbs, as well as large-scale low-cost housing schemes designed to improve access to affordable accommodation.

A flagship initiative among these is the Emthunzini Project, located near Pumula South in Bulawayo. The project is being implemented under the jurisdiction of Umguza Rural District Council and is aimed at providing affordable housing to the general public. It follows the completion of a similar development in Pelandaba West, undertaken in collaboration with the Bulawayo City Council.

Under the Emthunzini model, clients make an affordable deposit and begin paying monthly instalments while construction is underway. Once completed, typically within 12 months, beneficiaries take occupation of their homes and continue paying over a further 12-year period until full ownership is achieved.

According to Mr Moyo, demand for the project has been exceptionally strong since its launch in 2010, with the available 3 000 housing stands rapidly being taken up.

The company attributes its operational success to its skilled and multidisciplinary workforce, which includes engineers, quantity surveyors, bricklayers, artisans, and administrative professionals.

Technologically, Hawkflight has integrated modern tools such as AutoCAD, ArchiCAD, DraftCAD, and Building Information Modelling (BIM) into its design and engineering processes. These systems enable the company to produce precise, efficient and scalable construction solutions for both current and future projects.

In its summary of core competencies, the company highlights expertise in residential and commercial construction, water and sewer master planning, road construction, stormwater management, sewerage systems and civil engineering works.

It also continues to play a role in sourcing and servicing residential stands, manufacturing building materials and delivering end-to-end housing solutions.

Beyond infrastructure, Hawkflight maintains a presence in community life through sports sponsorship, notably supporting the Highlanders Football Club, which it views as a unifying force within Matabeleland and beyond.
