THE Hockey Association of Zimbabwe (Haz) has appealed to the government for financial aid ahead of the Under-21 World Hockey Cup which the country will be taking part in later in the year.
The finals roar into life from November 24 to December 4.
With just over three months before the World Cup finals begin in Santiago, Chile, the association has lined up a number of fundraising activities that will also include a golf tournament set for Royal Harare Golf Club on September 23 where they hope to raise at least $20,000, according to Haz president Humphrey Chigwedere.
“The fundraising team has stepped up efforts to raise the required resources. So far a deposit towards accommodation for the team has been paid to a hotel in Chile. Some fundraising events have been lined up; these include a golf day which will be held on Friday 23 September 2016 at Royal Harare Golf course. We are hoping that golfers will support this event where we are targeting to raise a substantial amount, that is, about $20, 000. We are also calling for prizes for the golf day. Another fundraising effort will be a Gala Evening where various sponsors will be drawn out to determine the gold sponsors for the team. Various raffles and auctions will be considered as well, with one raffle having been held at the recent Schools Golden and Silver Girls Hockey tournament,” said Chigwedere.
The hockey supremo said their preparations for the finals were well underway with all the foreign based players back in their bases where their preparations will be closely monitored by the technical staff through video footages.
“All of the foreign based players have gone back to their college bases and they have been given a training regime which they are to follow religiously. The coaches will be monitoring them closely using the video footages of their matches among other means.
The local based ladies will continue to attend training sessions as well as play in the current provincial league,” said Chigwedere.
The team had a rough qualification schedule where parents had to fork out their own personal resources for the girls to be able to attend the qualifiers which were held in Namibia in March.
