IN a sad development, Hockey Association of Zimbabwe have withdrawn their participation at the FIH Hockey Women’s Junior World Cup scheduled for Santiago, Chile in December.

HAZ cited financial constraints for their decision to pull out.

Zimbabwe’s Under-21 women’s side had qualified for the event after placing third at the Junior Africa Cup in April, in Namibia.

However, their participation has been surrounded by uncertainty because of financial challenges.

In a letter addressed to team members and management, HAZ president Grant Campbell said the decision was reached after extensive deliberation and comprehensive assessment of all possible avenues to facilitate the team’s involvement at the event.

“The Hockey Association of Zimbabwe, following consultation with the International Hockey Federation (FIH), hereby formally announces its withdrawal from participation in the forthcoming FIH Junior World Cup, scheduled to be held in Santiago, Chile, from December 1 to 13, 2025.

“The decision was reached after extensive deliberation and a comprehensive assessment of all possible avenues to facilitate the team’s involvement in this prestigious international event. Regrettably, despite exhaustive efforts, circumstances have necessitated this course of action.

“The Hockey Association of Zimbabwe wishes to express its sincere gratitude to all team members, management, supporters, and partners for their unwavering dedication and understanding throughout this process.

“We remain committed to the continued development and advancement of hockey in Zimbabwe and look forward to future opportunities to represent our nation on the international stage,” reads the letter

Speaking to Zimpapers Sports Hub last month HAZ secretary general Sarah Bennett said they were looking at between US$180 000 and US$200 000 for the team to participate at the global competition.
