A Harare woman took her ex-husband to court yesterday demanding $500 000 in maintenance for the upkeep of their children.
Melody Chemai accused her ex-husband, Lameck Chanakira, of being selfish when it comes to providing money for his kids’ upkeep.
She said he forcibly took their two children to his mother in the village, but doesn’t cater for their needs.
“He took our kids to his mother without my consent, but they still go to my mother’s place for food and stationery.
“He should just give me the kids and start paying maintenance because my children are not happy there. Your Worship, they are told to go to my mother every time they need food or any other assistance. He is well paid, but selfish with his money,” she said.
Lameck said he could not afford to pay the amount she was demanding and instead offered $30 000.
“Your Worship, l am a money changer and l also have another family to take care of.
“My mum takes good care of our children and l send them money and groceries all the time.”
Presiding magistrate Ayanda Dhlamini ordered him to pay $40 000.
