Upgrading of the Headlands-Chiendambuya-Mayo Road in Manicaland Province is progressing, with the contractor having completed 6km of the targeted 10km stretch.
The project forms part of the Government’s infrastructure development programme, which has seen investments in road construction and rehabilitation across the country since 2018.
Once completed, the upgraded road is expected to improve connectivity, ease the movement of people and goods, and enhance access to essential social services and markets in Makoni District.
The road links Headlands with Chiendambuya, Mayo and surrounding agricultural areas, providing access to markets, schools, healthcare facilities and other essential services while strengthening connections between Manicaland and Mashonaland East provinces.
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development confirmed the development, saying the Headlands–Mayo–Mutoko Road Construction Project was another step closer to improved connectivity and easier movement.
“Once complete, the road will provide a strategic shortcut linking the Headlands–Harare–Mutare Road with the Harare–Mutoko–Nyamapanda Road, reducing travel distances and improving access for communities, businesses and motorists,” the ministry said.
In an interview, Manicaland Provincial Roads Engineer Raphael Sigauke said surfacing of the remaining four kilometres was expected to be completed by the end of the month.
“What we have done here is a completed six-kilometre section of the Headlands-to-Mayo road, commonly referred to as the Headlands-Chiendambuya road. In the coming week, we will witness the surfacing of another two-kilometre stretch, while the remaining two kilometres will be done the following week,” he said.
“In total, we will have 10 kilometres fully surfaced by the end of the month. We will continue maintaining the rest of the road, while the remaining 30 kilometres will also be gravelled and upgraded.”
Meanwhile, surfacing is also in progress on the Chipinge–Mt Selinda Road construction project, as more roads are also under construction countrywide.
Some of these roads include the Ngundu area along the Harare-Masvingo-Beitbridge Highway, Seke Road, Murewa-Madicheche Road, Kwekwe-Nkayi-Lupane Road, Plumtree-Maitengwe Road, Guyu-Manama Road, Wedza-Sadza Road, and Maphisa- San Yet Road, among others.
Works are also progressing well on the Gave River Bridge along the Birchenough-Murambinda Road construction project
According to the ministry, the Government remains committed to delivering quality road infrastructure that connects communities, improves mobility and drives socio-economic development.
