A health hazard is looming in Chitungwiza as council is failing to provide critical services like refuse collection and attending to sewer pipe bursts.
Council said it was failing to attend to its duties due to fuel shortages. This is despite the fact that the supply of fuel has improved vastly during the lockdown period.
The local authority announced its temporary incapacitation through a statement.
“Dear residents, we would like to inform you that service delivery has been adversely impacted due to non-availability of fuel. As such, door-to-door refuse collection is being effected. This is also likely to affect attendance to sewer problems. Any inconvenience caused is greatly regretted,” read the statement.
Chitungwiza Progressive Residents Association secretary-general Mr Gift Kurupati said the statement showed that the management was a reactive and not proactive one.
“Why is council failing to buy fuel when the commodity is readily available? This is a sad reality considering the threat posed by Covid-19. We cannot risk having an outbreak of other diseases like cholera.
Chitungwiza and Manyame Resident Association (CAMERA) acting director Mr Brighton Kanyama said it was unfortunate that council continued to rely on local service stations for its service delivery vehicles.
“Council should buy its fuel in bulk. They knew there would be a lockdown, council should have made plans. This will expose residents to diseases as more illegal dumpsites will emerge, raw sewage will flow into our streets,” he said.
