The Health and Child Care ministry urgently needs funds to recapitalise the National Pharmaceutical Company of Zimbabwe.
Permanent secretary in the ministry, Dr Gerald Gwinji said Government should come up with domestic funding mechanisms instead of relying on donors for drugs.
About 98 percent of the country’s drugs come from donors, a situation health officials described as a “serious national security threat.” The ministry was presently engaging banks to come up with financing modalities.
“We believe we can come up with innovative and efficient domestic financing mechanisms that can see Government progressively contribute more, and donors less,” Dr Gwinji said. “As a ministry we will continue to lobby Government to allocate more resources to the ministry through various mechanisms, existing and to be developed.”
He said it was Government’s responsibility to oversee health provisions for its population hence the need to come up with strategies to cover the gaps.
