Zimbabwe, on Thursday, joined the rest of the world in commemorating World Kidney Day with calls for people to adopt healthier lifestyles to prevent kidney disease.
Speaking during the commemorations organised by the National Men’s Forum at CBD Dialysis, the forum’s health advisor, Dr Obediah Moyo, said people should prioritise regular health check-ups and seek medical attention early.
“Kidney disease is a silent killer because symptoms usually appear when the condition is already advanced, which is why we must encourage early testing and regular visits to health professionals,” he said.
He highlighted the importance of adopting simple lifestyle habits that help protect kidney health.
“Prevention remains the most effective approach. Simple lifestyle changes such as exercising regularly, eating healthy foods, staying hydrated and monitoring blood pressure can go a long way in protecting kidney health,” he said.
The commemorations were held under the theme “Kidney Health for All: Caring for People, Protecting the Planet,” which encourages greater focus on prevention and sustainable kidney care.
“This year’s theme reminds us that kidney care must focus on prevention, early detection and treatment systems that improve people’s quality of life,” said Dr Moyo.
The commemorations brought together health professionals and stakeholders to raise awareness about kidney health and the importance of early detection.
World Kidney Day is observed annually on the second Thursday in March. It serves as a day to raise global health awareness, focusing on the importance of the kidneys and reducing the frequency and impact of kidney disease and its associated health problems worldwide.
