FORMER Zimbabwe cricket team captain Heath Streak has lauded the roping in of national team players Christopher Mpofu and John Nyumbu into the technical team of the Old Mutual Heath Streak Cricket Academy saying this would instil professionalism in the youngsters from the grassroots level.
Speaking at the launch of the inaugural Old Mutual T20 Under-14 tournament at the academy on Wednesday, Streak said it was not everywhere in the world where established players are willing to coach youngsters.
“The holding of this tournament has been a huge step going forward and I would like to thank everyone who was involved in running this academy in my absence. I think they did a good job, especially in bringing in those two international stars,” said Streak.
“I believe this will go a long way in grooming our players and instilling professionalism from an early age.”
Old Mutual communications consultant Tendai Mutseyekwa said his company was honoured to be associated with the academy as they were passionate about developing sport at grassroots levels.
“We are honoured to be involved in this tournament and as a corporate, we are glad to see our sports grow from strength to strength, especially when it involves youngsters. Youngsters are the future and we trust that with these tournaments we will raise a responsible and successful generation,” said Mutseyekwa.
The Old Mutual Under-14 side coached by Cunningham Ncube cruised to an 11-run victory over their Holiday Inn counterparts.
Old Mutual knocked 126 for three in their allotted 15 overs and successfully defended that total by restricting Holiday Inn to 115-6 to take home the winner’s shield.
