AT least 11 families in Bulilima District had their homes destroyed by heavy rains that pounded the district over the past few days. The District Civil Protection Unit (CPU) has reported that villages near Ndolwane area were the worst affected.Area councillor, Ian Matiwaza said homesteads close to Manzamnyama River on the border with Tsholotsho were flooded as the river overflowed.
“I received a report that 11 homes in Dzilo and Mabulana villages were destroyed. The ground is saturated with water as we have been receiving heavy rains since weekend,” Clr Matiwaza said.
“Dzilo is close to Manzamnyana River and homes in that village are the most affected. Most huts collapsed after being soaked in water. A number of areas are waterlogged and it is difficult to access them.”
He said villagers were living in fear of more damage as the downpour continue.
“We fear that more homes will be destroyed because they are still waterlogged and the rains continue to pour. The river is also a threat because if it continues to spill people’s homes will be destroyed,” said Clr Matiwaza.
Bulilima District Administrator, Ethel Moyo said areas such as Khame, Bambadzi and Ndolwane were the worst affected.
