SIXTEEN homesteads and a dam were this week destroyed in Gokwe and Kwekwe by heavy rains that also displaced scores of people.
The Minister of State for Midlands Provincial Affairs Cde Jason Machaya said the Civil Protection Unit (CPU) was still assessing the extent of the damage to properties and infrastructure.
“There has been a disaster due to heavy rains that have been experienced in most parts of the Midlands Province and the CPU is still compiling figures of all destroyed infrastructure and misplaced people,” said Cde Machaya.
“Gokwe South is the most affected area in the province and the Gokwe South DA has visited the area and a whole village was washed away resulting in 16 homesteads being destroyed.”
He said part of Gokwe North and some parts of Mberengwa were also destroyed due to the heavy rains.
Cde Machaya said livestock had also been affected.
He said Government and its partners have already started providing food and shelter to the families who were affected by the rains.
“We have already started to mobilise our resources and also our partners such as Red Cross and CPU usually assist us during times like these so that we can help the displaced people with food and shelter especially in Gokwe South,” said Cde Machaya.
He said Mayoka Dam which is located in Kwekwe was also destroyed.
