THE Meteorological Services Department of Zimbabwe says the current heavy downpour is expected to continue until the New Year and has warned the public to be very cautious during this period. The principal meteorological officer in the Met Department, Mr Jonathan Chifuna, told the Sunday News that some parts of Matabeleland South and Masvingo and the southern part of Manicaland could experience flooding.
“The heavy rains that have been experienced in the country of late are set to continue till 1 January 2015 especially in the southern part of the watershed.
“We advise people not to attempt crossing flooded rivers or steams either on foot or using vehicles as it poses a lot of danger to their lives. We also encourage people not to shelter from the rains under trees or to park their vehicles under and near trees,” he said.
“People must not walk in flat open areas where they are the tallest object as they can be struck by lightning. People have to stay indoors where they are safe from the heavy downpours.”
It is expected that the weather will generally be cloudy with patchy morning rains followed by widespread afternoon and evening thunderstorms which may be violent at times.
