Helcraw Water has installed over 92 000 prepaid smart water meters in Harare as the programme continues to expand across the capital.

The organisation’s public relations officer, Melisa Chatikobo, said their teams are currently working in Hopely, Glenora C, Glen View 7 and Arlington, bringing improved water management solutions closer to residents.

“The programme is aimed at promoting more efficient water use, improving billing accuracy and strengthening accountability in the delivery of water services,” she said.

“Pipe replacement works are also progressing well, with teams currently working in Waterfalls, Southerton and Avondale.

“We are removing old asbestos-cement pipes and replacing them with PVC pipes to improve the condition of the distribution network, reduce water losses caused by leakages and support more reliable water delivery to households and businesses.

“These improvements are an important step towards ensuring that treated water reaches the communities it is intended to serve.”

Chatikobo said the works are part of Helcraw Water’s partnership with the City of Harare to rehabilitate and modernise the city’s water infrastructure, with residents at the centre of the programme.

“Beyond installing meters and replacing pipes, the ultimate goal is to improve the experience of residents by addressing infrastructure challenges, strengthening water distribution and supporting more sustainable water services,” she said.

“We recognise the importance of reliable access to water for households, businesses and community development, and we remain committed to working with the City of Harare to advance these improvements.”
