HERALD Gender editor Ruth Butaumocho has been shortlisted for the CNN MultiChoice African Journalist Awards for 2015. Butaumocho submitted a feature on how Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) have revolutionalised lives of ordinary rural women.

The story was selected from more than 1 400 entries in 13 categories. Butaumocho is among two Zimbabwean journalists who will join other finalists for the Gala Award Ceremony to be held in Nairobi, Kenya, next month.

At least 15 countries across the African continent are taking part in the awards. In an interview yesterday, Butaumocho said she was excited by the recognition of her hard work in trying to highlight societal ills. “I am excited. It is the measure of the hard work I put in every day,” she said.

Butaumocho has also won several awards locally administered by the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists and among these are the Health and Agriculture Reporter of the Year. She joined zimpapers in 2000 and has held several positions including Features, Entertainment and Lifestyle editor.

The CNN MultiChoice African Journalist Award is given in recognition of the importance of the role of journalists in Africa’s development. The award is also meant to reward, recognise and encourage journalistic talent across all media disciplines. The competition has been running for the past 20 years.
